Friday was our last full day at Dutchman (until 2016) so we drove a few miles to Tonto Forest trail head for a little hike. We did the “First Water” trail this past Feb so this time we tried “Second Water” trail. These trails go for 18+ miles (or longer if you’re really ambitious) but we just did a little 6 mile down and back.
Some of the hike led us over some very rocky terrain which bothered all 20 of our feet a bit, but the beautiful scenery and fresh horse poop (Tango’s favorite…ick!) made it well worth it.
We got a late start and the afternoon was going fast, so we stopped at a convenient turn around point for a drink and a snack! We all enjoyed the chance to meander along such beautiful scenery. We met a few other hikers along the trail and they alway comment on what beautiful well behaved dogs we have. If they only knew ☺️
Saturday we moved to our new location for the next two weeks. We are at Catalina State Park a bit north of Tucson AZ. We are just getting the feel for the park, at the base of the Catalina Mountains. They have a herd of Big Horn Sheep they have re-introduced to the park so some of the trails have restricted access…no dogs. But, there are plenty of hiking trails available to do with the dogs, so no problems. We did a 5 mile hike this afternoon to scope out the lay of the land. Very fun, but we ended up crossing the same stream about 8 times. The BCs didn’t mind, but the people were hoping not to fall in 😊 Nice campground with mostly large level spots. Surprisingly, or maybe not since it’ll be Christmas week, the park is pretty empty. Not as scenic or as many on site hiking trails as Lost Dutchman, nor is the park as clean or well maintained, but we think it’ll be a great place to spend the next two weeks!
Anyone remember the theme song to the Monkees TV show? This is our version.
Here we come, walkin’
Down the street.
We get the funniest looks from
Ev’ry one we meet.
Hey, hey, we’re the border collies
And people say we monkey around.
But we’re too busy hiking
To put anybody down.
